We’re all evil. I was going to review Channel 4’s Britain’s Fattest Man tonight, but got a little sidetracked.
It is possible that I felt for him so much because I could identify with him. So many parallels can be drawn between Anorexia,Longchamp backpack, Bulimia and Compulsive Eating Disorder – it is the expression of something deeply psychological which somehow manifests itself within a negative relationship with food – many of the things he said about how he felt, how desperate he was to get better and the things he lost through his illness rang true with me. I’m sure that many other viewers found parts of the documentary uncomfortable viewing and felt sympathetic towards Paul; I only wish they outnumbered those who would never allow themselves to be moved, those who laugh in the face of something they just don’t understand. Shame on them.

I would like to think that we’re not all stupid enough not to realise that obesity is the result of gluttony alone. It’s a sad reality if it is true that is has just become acceptable to make judgements about people based on their weight. This country.
Cynical being that I am, I knew that the majority of reponses would be negative, but the intensity,Longchamp Coin Purses, the feelings of angers, even hatred towards this man left me feeling physically sick. It got me thinking – what is it that makes people think that it is ok to bully others so outwardly, to criticise problems that they don’t understand, to insult those they know nothing about? Why are some so unable to symathise with those who become so ill that they need help to get well enough simply to be independent? Why are we so bloody horrible?

To get a gist of the public reaction to what I found a very emotional, honest expose of a man who I’m sure has already had his share of abuse and humiliation, I followed the #britainsfattestman hashtag on Twitter. I was expecting a plethora of abusive messages – people always do attack easy targets – but nothing could prepare me for the tirade of sickening comments, sneers and whatever other disgusting crap was coming out of these thoughtless Twitterers.

People see a morbidly obese man eating numerous packets of crisps and they presume that their only problem is greed – they don’t see it as an illness, and that is where the fault lies – hence the belief that it’s ok to slag off all the fatties – because it’s “their own fault”.
People who saw this will have surely heard Paul being described as a victim of an Eating Disorder, and seen and heard a leading expert in the field explaining very eloquently that a person of his weight does not ever decide to become obese. It is spelled out to viewers that this kind of Eating Disorder, which is characterised by compulsive binge eating, is almost always due to a deep-rooted psychological problem. Paul himself admits that his eating habits were beyond his control. Nobody chooses to develop an Eating Disorder. Is that so hard to understand? Maybe it’s just more fun to ignore the facts and keep on making cheap jokes.
